This house was built in 1986 on top of a hill from mostly recycled materials- barn beams & steel & 3 cedar corn silos. There are 25 cubic meters of concrete on the 3 roofs with continuous layer of insulation on exterior of concrete structure & under radiant hollow floors. 3500 sq. ft of floor space. With 8″-18″ of earth on the 3 roofs it is warm & cosy in the winter & cool & dry in the summer. I believe it is one of the most energy efficient houses in Canada.

We know that wood disposal can be challenging and expensive for arborists and managers of urban and community forests. You’ve heard that logs from city trees can’t be used for anything but mulch or fuel. This simply isn’t true.

Our partners can show you how city trees can still be made into everything from rough lumber for maintenance projects to beautiful, high-end flooring. All it takes is a little advance planning, and we can help you work out an efficient system to sort and handle logs so that your removed trees can find new life.

Southeast Michigan’s Urbanwood Project conserves resources, supports local jobs, and can reduce wood disposal costs for operations like yours. Show your support for creating a more sustainable Southeast Michigan by joining the Urbanwood Project. Visit their website, urbanwood.org, to learn more.

Reclaimed Lumber Species

KVL ‘harvests’ lumber from a variety of sources. Old buildings and structures slated for demolition provide a great resource for antique wood. In some cases, this very usable resource might simply have become landfill. With the proper handling and reworking, it can now become flooring, furniture, or even used as structural elements again.

The Reclaimer, LLC began when Gary Schwirblat was working as a contractor in LA and realized wood from demolished buildings in LA was going into landfills ground up for fertilizer, releasing large amounts of carbon into the atmosphere. Plus, the wood was mostly 100 yr old Douglas Fir, superior quality to new growth wood.

Reclaimed wood is the greenest building product available and its beauty is perfect for the design goals of business and homeowners. Gary just began saving the wood because his childhood summers spent study conservation made it difficult for him to see it go to waste but. Finally his stockpile was so big he had to do something, so he partnered up with Eric to find end users. The more wood The Reclaimer sells the more they keep out of landfills. The natural environment of reclaimed wood, there is nothing else like it!

This Pulse video travels to North Carolina to visit the Whole Log Lumber mill, which purchases wood from demolition sites, fires, and trash heaps in order to revive and resell it. This place is the fountain of youth for worn out lumber, and the high quality of the semiprecious hardwoods that are routinely uncovered takes business away from rainforest-clearing loggers. It’s enough to have sticklers for fine and rare wood muttering about the ‘good old days.’ But when we follow the wood back to Brooklyn, we find a restaurant under construction, using reclaimed wood from the Whole Log mill to finish a beautiful dining room. Easy, old timer. They’re still making ‘em like they used to.
